Detroit MYS

WATCH NOW: See us in action and learn what makes us unique.

Students come to us looking for more of a musical challenge, and stay because it is fun.

WATCH NOW: Our youngest students in Sinfonia String were asked, “Why do you love DMYS?”

One of the oldest youth symphonies in the state of Michigan, Detroit Metropolitan Youth Symphony is recognized for the outstanding accomplishments of our four student orchestras, our encouragement of the talent and musical development of our student members, for our commitment to excellence, and for our leadership in music education.

The Detroit MYS experience is designed to supplement the advancing student's school program.

Our Passion

Detroit MYS promotes a high level of musicianship and a challenging musical experience in an orchestral setting for interested, dedicated students.

Young musicians attending elementary, middle and high school in the metropolitan Detroit area come from nearly 50 communities.

Detroit MYS offers an opportunity to advance your skills to a new level with other interested and dedicated students.

Our mission is to cultivate a LIFE-LONG love of music. Some of our students go on to focus on music in college and some of our students pursue other professions but are members of university and community orchestras and bands. Watch our recent workshop on college-level music to learn more - we aim to help students on whatever their path may be!

“My most memorable DMYS moment was my first day at a DMYS. It was so different from my other orchestras because people were willing to talk to you even if they didn’t know you. I felt so much more at home here.”
— DMYS Senior, upon graduation

Our Rehearsals

All four orchestras rehearse on Saturday mornings at the Hawk in Farmington Hills, MI, with a season that starts right after Labor Day and ends in early May.

Students arrive by 9:15 to promptly begin rehearsal at 9:30. Symphony, Concert and String students end at Noon. Sinfonia String students end at 11:30am.

Please see our Orchestras page for more information regarding auditions and performance.
